Essential Duas for Students

1. Dua is for beneficial knowldege, pure provision, and accepting deeds (to berecited after finishing fajr prayer):

اَللّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْألُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا
“O Allah, I ask you for beneficial knowldege,
وَرِزْقًا طَىِّبًا وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا
pure provision, and acceptable deeds.” (Ibn Majah)
اَللّهُمَّ انْفَعْنَا بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنَا وَعَلِّمْنَا مَا يَنْفَعُنَا وَزِدْنا عِلْمَا
“O Allah! Benefit us through what you teach us, and teach us what is beneficial forus, and increase us in knowldege.” (Ibn Majah)

اَللّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ وَمِنْ دَعْوَةٍ لَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا
“O Allah, We seek refuge with you from knowldege that is not beneficial, from a heart that isnot humbe (beafore you), from a soul that isnot satisfied,and from a supplication that is not answered.” (Shahih Muslim)

2. Dua asking for wisdom

اَللّهُمَّ عَلِّمْنَا الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَفَقِّهْنا فِي الدِّيْنِ
[Transliteration: Allaahumma allimnal-kitaaba wal-hikmata, wa-faqqihnaa fid-deen]
“O Allah! Teach me the Book and wisdom, and grant me understanding of the religion.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

3. Dua asking for firmness in faith (Iman):

اَللّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْنَا وَاجْعَلْنَا هَادِيْنَا مَهْدِيِّيْنَ
Transliteration: [allaahumma thabbitnaa, wajalnaa haa-dee-naa mahddiyyeen]
Translation: “O Allah! Make us firm (in faith), guide us, and make us ameans to guidance.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

4. Dua to seek protection from bad manners and character:

اَللّهُـمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوْذُبِكَ مِنْ مُنْكَرَاتِ الْأَخْلَاقِ وَالْأَعْمَالِ وَالْأَهْوَاءِ
Transliteration: [allaahumma innaa na’udu bika min munkaraatil-akhlaaq(i), wal-a’maal(i) wal-ahwaa’] (Sunan At-Tirmidhiy # 3591)
Translation: “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from bad manner, deeds and desire.”

5. Dua to seek protection from hardship and enemies:

اَللّهُـمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوْذُبِكَ مِنْ جَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ، وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ، وَسُوْءِ الْقَضَاءِ، وَشَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ

Transliteration: [allaahumma innaa na’udu bika min jahdil-balaa’ (i), wa-daraki-shaqaa’(i), wa-suu-ilqaDaa’(i), wa-shamaa-tatil-a’daa’(i).]
Translation: “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from difficulty of afflictions, from thr burden of hardship, from evil judgment and from the enemy’s malicious rejoicing (for my suffering).” (Sahih Al-Bukhari # 6347)

6. Syyed-ul-Istighfar with english translation:
O Allah You are our Lord,

لَا اِلهَ إِلاَّ اَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنَا
None has the right to be worshipped except You, You created us,

وَنَحْنُ عَلي عَهْدِكَ وَنَحْنُ عِبَادُكَ
And we are Your servants, And we abide to Your covenant

وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْنَا نَعُوْذُبِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْنَا
And promise as best we can, We take refuge in You from the evil of which we have committed.

نَبُوْءُ لَكَ بِنِعَمِكَ عَلَيْنَا وَنَبُوْءُ بِذُنُوْبِنَا
We acknowledge Your favour upon us, And we acknowledge our sins,

فَاغْفِرْلَنَا فَاِنَّه لاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ اِلاَّ اَنْتَ
So forgive us, for verily none can forgive us except You.

Significant of Syed ul Istighfar (Pray for Repentance):

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “If somebody recites syed ul istighfar during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the someday before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise and somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.” (Sahih Bukhari: 6308)

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (ra): Allah’s Apostle (pbuh) said, “Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His slave than anyone of you is pleased with finding his camel which he had lost in the desert.” (Sahih Bukhari: 6311)

7. Dua Qunoot for Witr Salaat (Prayer):

اَللَّهُمَّ إنا نَسْتَعِينُكَ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَنُؤْمِنُ بِكَ وَنَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْكَ وَنُثْنِيْ عَلَيْكَ الخَيْرَ وَنَشْكُرُكَ وَلَا نَكْفُرُكَ وَنَخْلَعُ وَنَتْرُكُ مَنْ ئَّفْجُرُكَ

اَللَّهُمَّ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَلَكَ نُصَلِّيْ وَنَسْجُدُ وَإِلَيْكَ نَسْعي وَنَحْفِدُ وَنَرْجُوْا رَحْمَتَكَ وَنَخْشي عَذَابَكَ إِنَّ عَذَابَكَ بِالكُفَّارِ مُلْحَقٌ

Dua Qunoot In English Transliteration:
Allah humma inna nasta-eenoka wa nastaghfiruka wa nu’minu bika wa natawakkalu alaika wa nusni alaikal khair, wa nashkuruka wala nakfuruka wa nakhla-oo wa natruku mai yafjuruka,

Allah humma iyyaka na’budu wa laka nusalli wa nasjudu wa ilaika nas aaa wa nahfizu wa narju rahma taka wa nakhshaa azaabaka inna azaabaka bil kuffari mulhikun

Dua Qunoot in English Translation: O Allah! We implore you alone for help and beg forgiveness from You alone, And believe in You and rely on You, And praise You for all the good things, And we are grateful to You and not ungrateful to You, And we turn away and give up him who disobeys you.
O Allah! You alone do we worship, And for You do we pray and bow before You alone, And we hasten to please You and we fear Your severe punishment, And we hope for Your Mercy and fear Your admonishment, Verily’ your severe punishment is going to overtake the unbelievers

8. Dua for Deceased:

اللهُـمَّ اغْفِـرْ لِحَيِّـنَا وَمَيِّتِـنَا وَشَـاهِدِنَا، وَغَائِبِـنَا، وَصَغِيـْرِنَا وَكَبِيْـرِنَا، وَذَكَـرِنَا وَأُنْثـَانَا. اللهُـمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْـتَه مِنّا فَأَحْيِـه عَلَى الإِسْلاَم، وَمَنْ تَوَفَّـيْتَه مِنّا فَتَوَفَّـهُ عَلى الإِيْـمَان، اللهُـمّ لا تَحْـرِمْنَـا أَجْـرَه، وَلا تُضِـلَّنَا بَعْـدَه

Transliteration:
Allaahum-maghfir lihayyinaa, wa mayyitinaa, wa shaahidinaa, wa ghaa’ibinaa, wa sagheerinaa wa kabeerinaa, wa thakarinaa wa ‘unthaanaa. Allaahumma man ‘ahyaytahu minnaa fa’ahyihi ‘alal-‘Islaami, wa man tawaffaytahu minnaa fatawaffahu ‘alal-‘eemaani, Allaahumma laa tahrimnaa ‘ajrahu wa laa tudhillanaa ba’dahu.

Translation: O Allah forgive our living and our dead, those who are with us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our menfolk and our womenfolk.

O Allah, whomever you give life from among us give him life in Islam, and whomever you take away from us take him away in Faith. O Allah, do not forbid us their reward and do not send us astray after them.

9. Dua asking for Taqwa and Purification of the Soul:

اللَّهُمَّ آتِ نَفْسِي تَقْوَاهَا وَزَكِّهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا أَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَوْلَاهَا
Allāhumma Āti Nafsī Taqwāhā wa Zakkihā Anta Khayru man Zakkāhā Anta Waliyyuhā wa Mawlāhā (Sahih Muslim).
O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it, You are the Best to purify it, You are its Guardian and Master.

10. Dua before ending Salah (prayer)| The four Trials:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْمَأْثَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ

Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oothu bika min ‘athaabil-qabri,
wa ‘a’oothu bika min fitnatil-maseehid-dajjaali,
wa ‘a’oothu bika min fitnatil- mahyaa walmamaati.
Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oothu bika minal-ma’thami walmaghrami.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave,
and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the False Messiah,
and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and from debt.
